Fighting for the planet, one methane comment at a time

When a kid knocks at your door, you might expect a Girl Scout selling cookies or a Boy Scout selling popcorn. But recently, it was my 13 year-old neighbor, Pete Bates, asking me to sign a letter to fight methane pollution. I thought this was pretty neat, because while my day-to-day job is focused on […]

Here are some key articles and op-eds to help you get up to speed on FirstEnergy's shameless plea to the DOE.
Wednesday April 11, 2018 - Edition #51
Could this be a delay tactic? Or is the DOE creating an opportunity to build support for FirstEnergy’s proposal in the absence of an endorsement from PJM (the regional grid operator)?
We don’t know, but anyone interested in protecting America’s electricity markets should keep an eye on that page. Raking in the outrageously big bucks Since Chuck Jones became FirstEnergy’s chief executive in January 2015, he has declared bankruptcy for his generation unit, closed outdated power plants, and watched the company’s stock price plummet 13 percent.
So why has Jones’ salary soared 53 percent -- from $10 million in 2015 to $15.3 million in 2017 – in just three years? Nifty nifty, looks who’s fifty With the FirstEnergy whiplash we’ve been experiencing over the past two weeks, we totally forgot to celebrate our fiftieth edition last week. FirstEnergy is shameless begging the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) to bail out its (and many, many more) uneconomic coal and nuclear plants.
In case you missed it, here are some key articles and op-eds to help you get up to speed:
- In The Hill: Why taxpayers shouldn’t foot an $8 billion bailout bill, from our own Dick Munson
- In The Washington Post: How a broad array of critics are urging the Trump administration to ignore FirstEnergy’s pleas, by Steven Mufson
- In The Washington Examiner: How FirstEnergy’s proposal would cost consumers billions and destroy market competition, by R Street, the Electricity Consumers Resource Council, the American Chemistry Council, and the Advanced Energy Buyers Group
- In The Wall Street Journal (paywall): Why FirstEnergy has few allies in this fight, by Erin Ailworth and Russell Gold
TL;DR: Pretty much everyone thinks FirstEnergy’s request is a rotten deal for America.

6 years 6 months ago
Fred Krupp share’s EDF’s plan to track global methane emissions with incredible precision using a satellite called MethaneSAT, which will give governments, corporations and the public the data to act. This ambitious plan is one of the first ideas of The Audacious Project, TED’s new initiative to inspire global change.

Mississippi River's high water is a missed opportunity to restore the coast
6 years 6 months ago
While Louisiana’s coast continues to erode at the rate of one football field every 100 minutes, the resource it so preciously needs — sediment — has continued to flow right past the areas where it’s needed most. Op-ed by Steve Cochran for The Times-Picayune.
