Critics of Trump’s possible multi-billion-dollar bailout are growing in number and intensity. 

Below are just a few of the recent quotes associated with FirstEnergy’s plea to use Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act. By asking for all coal and nuclear plants within the PJM grid to be considered “emergency” units that receive profit guarantees, the proposal aims to raise Americans’ electricity bills by over $8 billion annually.

Trade associations, think tanks, grid operators, and energy companies all oppose the brazen request:

• “Measures such as 202(c) orders, or other steps to place thumbs on the scale, would needlessly raise electricity costs by billions of dollars annually.”

• We asked this last time, but it’s a question that bears repeating: Since he became FirstEnergy’s chief executive in January 2015, Chuck Jones has declared bankruptcy for his generation unit, closed outdated power plants, and watched his stock price plummet 13 percent. So why has his salary soared 53 percent – from $10 million in 2015 to $15.3 million in 2017 – in just three years?  
   
• President Trump just issued an executive order to prevent a taxpayer bailout of the United States Postal Service, a non-profit public government agency that provides a service to everyone.  Why, then, is he considering an $8-billion per year bailout for failing coal and nuclear plants owned by private, poorly-managed electric utilities?
   
• FirstEnergy has made numerous bad business decisions over the years, like doubling down on coal and nuclear plants as the cost of natural gas and renewable was plummeting. Now the company’s power plants are uneconomic. Why is Secretary Perry, who advanced free energy markets as Texas governor, saying: “I don’t think economics – I don’t think that’s the issue?”
   
• During the 2011 presidential debate, Secretary Perry said he wanted to not only limit the powers of the Department of Energy, but get rid of it altogether (though he couldn’t even remember its name). Why is he now considering using the agency to approve a multi-billion-dollar bailout?
