As moratorium on North Carolina wind power winds down, economic opportunity appears on the horizon

I’ve never been more optimistic about wind power in North Carolina and the benefits it will bring our state. And, given that we’re in the middle of a very unfortunate 18-month moratorium on wind project permits, that’s saying something. I’m optimistic because the benefits of wind power are making themselves crystal clear. Here are few […]

Today marks my one year anniversary of joining EDF Climate Corps, where I’ve spent the last 12 months helping companies think through the strategies for meeting – or setting – their climate goals. What I’ve learned in this short time is that companies are going beyond the “safe bet” to tackling bigger and more impactful […]

Critics of Trump’s possible multi-billion-dollar bailout are growing in number and intensity.

Below are just a few of the recent quotes associated with FirstEnergy’s plea to use Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act. By asking for all coal and nuclear plants within the PJM grid to be considered “emergency” units that receive profit guarantees, the proposal aims to raise Americans’ electricity bills by over $8 billion annually.

Trade associations, think tanks, grid operators, and energy companies all oppose the brazen request:

  • “Measures such as 202(c) orders, or other steps to place thumbs on the scale, would needlessly raise electricity costs by billions of dollars annually.”
  • “Such action would be unnecessarily anti-competitive and would increase the price of electricity to businesses and consumers, resulting in a substantial loss of U.S. manufacturing capacity and jobs.”
  • “FirstEnergy says there is an emergency in need of a solution but the market operator, PJM, has indicated repeatedly this is not the case."
  • “The PJM Report finds that performance during the 2017/2018 cold snap is ‘evidence that the grid in the PJM service area remains strong, diverse and reliable.’”
  • “[FirstEnergy’s proposal] would cripple the competitive market mechanism that drives long-term innovation to the benefit of millions of American families and businesses.”
  • “FirstEnergy doesn’t want to evolve. They’d rather go to the regulators and ask for a bailout.”
  • “This is about customers versus rent-seekers, good versus bad governance, and markets versus destructive government intervention. The grid is in transition, not crisis. In fact, it is undergoing a healthy and beneficial transformation.”

--> Pertinent questions
  • We asked this last time, but it’s a question that bears repeating: Since he became FirstEnergy’s chief executive in January 2015, Chuck Jones has declared bankruptcy for his generation unit, closed outdated power plants, and watched his stock price plummet 13 percent. So why has his salary soared 53 percent – from $10 million in 2015 to $15.3 million in 2017 – in just three years?

  • President Trump just issued an executive order to prevent a taxpayer bailout of the United States Postal Service, a non-profit public government agency that provides a service to everyone.  Why, then, is he considering an $8-billion per year bailout for failing coal and nuclear plants owned by private, poorly-managed electric utilities?

  • FirstEnergy has made numerous bad business decisions over the years, like doubling down on coal and nuclear plants as the cost of natural gas and renewable was plummeting. Now the company’s power plants are uneconomic. Why is Secretary Perry, who advanced free energy markets as Texas governor, saying: “I don’t think economics – I don’t think that’s the issue?”

  • During the 2011 presidential debate, Secretary Perry said he wanted to not only limit the powers of the Department of Energy, but get rid of it altogether (though he couldn’t even remember its name). Why is he now considering using the agency to approve a multi-billion-dollar bailout?
