Smog Pollution in National Parks Keep Families Away

The swamp that FirstEnergy built
Last month, President Trump directed Secretary of Energy Rick Perry to take steps to bail out the nation’s uneconomic coal and nuclear plants.
How exactly those steps will play out is still TBD, but it appears the administration is intent on making Americans pay – more than $34 billion! – for these outdated plants, enriching a few companies with well-connected lobbyists along the way.
This bailout effort didn’t appear overnight.
Over the past several years, FirstEnergy has been accumulating lobbyists left and right, slowly building a stairway to bailout heaven. After several profit-guarantee efforts failed in Ohio, FirstEnergy turned to Washington and expanded its deep bench of friends and allies, who are working to line coal executives’ pockets with Americans’ dollars.
Here are some of the players (that we know of):
- Ohio State Senator Eklund: Introduced legislation in Ohio to bail out FirstEnergy’s uneconomic nuclear plants. Also happens to work for a law firm that FirstEnergy retains.
- Corey Lewandowski: D.C. lobbyist and President Trump’s former campaign manager. Has worked with FirstEnergy CEO Chuck Jones, and is a major proponent of a federal coal bailout. Publicly pouted when earlier efforts were rejected. Met privately with the president just before the federal bailout plan was revealed.
- Jeff Miller: D.C. lobbyist who ran Perry's 2016 presidential campaign and guided him through the Senate confirmation process. According to E&E News, FirstEnergy “retained Miller [last] August and paid his firm $110,000 in the third quarter to work on ‘issues associated with organized electricity markets.’” Met privately with the president just before the federal bailout plan was revealed.
- Akin Gump: D.C. lobbying firm. Got paid $4 million by FirstEnergy this past April to work on energy regulatory issues.
- Robert Murray: Head honcho of Murray Energy, which has long supplied coal to FirstEnergy’s plants. Met with Energy Secretary Rick Perry in March, shortly before FirstEnergy urged the federal government to bail out its coal and nuclear plants.
- Andrew Wheeler: Former lobbyist for Murray Energy, now serving as Acting Administrator at EPA. Wheeler earned millions working for Murray, who already wants Wheeler to be made permanent chief. In one of Wheeler’s first acts as Administrator, he handed down a favorable ruling to the coal industry on toxic coal ash. Murray called him a “good guy,” saying, “I didn't want to lose him, but now the country has him." Can you say political revolving door?
Plus, in addition to the utility giant’s own army of lawyers, FirstEnergy also retains Van Scoyoc Associates, Holland & Knight LLP, and National Environmental Strategies.
Smells, no, reeks of swamp.
For past newsletters and other updates, you can always visit our FirstEnergy landing page.
The Dispatch called the effort “absurd” and “destructive,” and pointed out how coal simply can’t compete with newer, cleaner energy sources.
Murray fired back, suggesting such pronouncements were “fake” news. Protesting a bit too much, he also defended his company’s environmental safety record, even though a quick Google search shows that Murray’s negligent practices cost people their lives.
If the FirstEnergy and Murray swampers get their bailout, electricity customers also will lose billions and billions of dollars. --> --> Copyright © 2018 Environmental Defense Fund |Energy, All rights reserved.
