“In the face of today’s repeated attempts to put our health and safety at risk, Washington’s Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell fought to make sure that Americans will have clean air to breathe. They helped beat back four different measures in the U.S. Senate that would have weakened the Clean Air Act, which protects Americans from dangerous pollution like mercury, carbon, and methane. Senators Murray and Cantwell showed the kind of leadership that we need in Congress. Every person in Washington who has lungs should call them to say thank you.”

  • Attacks on Clean Air Act Fail in Four Senate Votes

    April 6, 2011

    NEWS RELEASE

    Contact:
    Tony Kreindler, 202-445-8108, tkreindler@edf.org

(Washington, DC – April, 6, 2011) Attempts to unravel public health protections under the Clean Air Act failed in the Senate today despite opportunities to vote on four different amendments from both parties. The amendments are a prelude to further attempts to weaken public health protections as the budget debate continues.

“Today’s votes were an unprecedented assault on public health protections under the Clean Air Act. In 40 years we’ve never faced such a brazen attempt to rollback air quality standards,” said Fred Krupp, president of Environmental Defense Fund. “It remains to be seen which Senators will continue to side with clean air and who will vote to go backward.”

The amendments from Sens. Max Baucus (D-MT), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) would have to varying degrees delayed or prevented the Environmental Protection Agency from implementing congressionally mandated and Supreme Court-affirmed responsibilities to address greenhouse gases from the largest sources of pollution.

  • Majority Of Texans Favor Full Chemical Disclosure In Hydraulic Fracturing

    April 6, 2011

    NEWS RELEASE

    Contact:
    Matt Smelser, 512.731.3023, msmelser@edf.org

(Austin – April 6, 2011) The Environmental Defense Fund purchased space on a statewide poll of Texas Republican Primary voters taken April 2-4, 2011 by Baselice and Associates. The results showed that 82 percent of Texas Republican Primary voters thought Texas oil and gas drillers should be required to publicly disclose the chemicals they use in hydraulic fracturing.

From Scott Anderson, Senior Policy Advisor:

“These results are a clear indication that it is time for industry to stop hiding the ball. An overwhelming majority of Texans, including Republican primary voters, want to require industry to tell the public what is in hydraulic fracturing fluid.”

    Participants were asked:
“Should oil and gas drillers in Texas be required to publicly disclose what chemicals, along with the water and sand, are used in their hydraulic fracturing operations?”
In response, 82 percent said yes, 13 percent said no and five percent were either unsure or refused to answer.

“The media reports about this issue are troubling and, as far as we know, there has been no denial or disavowal from the White House. The President and his team should make clear what their position is. At EDF, our position is that children’s health should not be a bargaining chip.”

    Fred Krupp, EDF President
