Program/Department Overview
The Economics Team is the nexus of economics at EDF, ensuring that the economic thinking that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available research and information. To be most effective in this role, the Economics team provides support for other teams throughout EDF and fosters relationships with economists outside the organization.
Overall Function
EDF’s Economics Team is seeking a postdoctoral economics fellow who is dedicated to deepening the economic underpinnings of our global advocacy in ways that are rigorous, evidence-based, effective and stand up to peer review. The fellow will support us in any of the following areas: climate mitigation policy (including transitions toward highly renewable electricity systems, climate finance, carbon pricing, just transition, and methane reduction from oil and gas production and from agriculture), and climate resilience (including risk reduction and management for floods, droughts and fires). The fellow will be part of a collaborative team and will report directly to the Associate Vice President of Economics and Policy.
Key Responsibilities

- Perform original research on topics relevant to EDF's advocacy, for publication.
- Develop collaborations between EDF and excellent researchers to support EDF goals.
- Monitor the peer-reviewed literature, and synthesize and disseminate relevant information for EDF economists, scientists, lawyers and policy specialists.
- Participate in the development or refinement of EDF's policy positions based on the Fellow's research, analysis and knowledge of peer-reviewed literature.
- Write at least one paper for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and present project results at workshops and conferences.
- Participate in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following:
- Hold a recent Ph.D. in economics, or a related area such as public policy, with a strong emphasis on environment or resources issues.
- Enthusiasm for applying rigorous economics to advance environmental objectives.
- Enjoy working with multidisciplinary teams that have a shared objective.
- Demonstrate record of research and success in managing and conducting rigorous economic analysis.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Well organized, motivated, and detail oriented.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently, using independent judgment and initiative to plan, prioritize, problem solve, and organize workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
