Data Integration Methane Scientist

The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that the science that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be most effective in this role, OCS provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization.

To stabilize the global climate, the world will need safe, large-scale technological innovation that delivers effective carbon mitigation on an accelerated timeline. Countless concepts and technologies are now in the nascent stages of scientific research. The more quickly we can identify obstacles to developing solutions that deliver benefits to people and the environment, as well as the means to safely address these obstacles, the more effective the investment community and governments can be in mobilizing effective strategies and technologies from demonstration to deployment. This position generates research which brings climate-positive innovations to the fore.

OVERALL FUNCTION

EDF Office of the Chief Scientist seeks a Data Integration Scientist with proven research, analysis, and writing skills to work collaboratively with external and EDF scientists, as well as decision makers (governments and industry) on policy-relevant research that characterizes methane emissions from global oil and gas infrastructure.

The Data Integration Scientist will be a key contributor to the work on the integration of accurate, empirical, measurement-based methane emissions data from diverse spatial and temporal scales to develop a comprehensive scientific understanding on methane emissions. The Data Integration Scientist will (i) develop and support projects to integrate existing and future methane emissions data from multiple data streams, (ii) work in validation and reconciliation projects to assess the quality of the data, (iii) conduct research and analysis into the use of methane emissions at multiple spatial and temporal scales (including but not limited to satellite data) among industry and regulators.

The Scientist will work with EDF's Office of the Chief Scientist in close collaboration with policy and legal experts and report to Senior Scientist II.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Design, plan and execute projects to integrate existing emissions data from multiple sources (e.g., remote sensing, source and site-level measurements) to characterize methane emissions at multiple scales.
  • Provide scientific guidance on the design of studies to collect multi-scale measurement-based methane emissions data to support robust measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) frameworks for methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.
  • Collaborate with other key research partners such as UNEP’s IMEO in terms of coordination of methane science studies and data integration projects.
  • Remain at the cutting-edge of methane emission detection and quantification science.
  • Synthesize scientific results and insights from recent literature and communicate that information to a multi-disciplinary team, including EDF scientists, policy experts, and corporate and community partnership specialists.
  • Lead and participate in the analysis and writing of papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Attend and professionally represent EDF at external meetings and interact with the scientific community at large.
  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
  • Independently support other “rapid response” and/or project development efforts on an as-needed basis.

QUALIFICATIONS (required)

  • A PhD in atmospheric science, physical sciences, engineering (e.g., chemical engineering) or related field with at least 2 years of experience, post-doc required.
  • A track record of performing and publishing methane-focused research.
  • Familiarity with methane emission datasets (i.e., in-situ measurements, satellite remote sensing).
  • Understanding of methane monitoring technologies and atmospheric modeling.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills and statistical analysis skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and maintenance of contacts within the scientific community.
  • Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work.
  • The ability to communicate complex ideas in writing and orally to multiple stakeholders with different levels of expertise, including the public and industry.
  • Must demonstrate cultural awareness and the knowledge, attitude, behavior and skills that lead to a culturally competent workplace. Must demonstrate a commitment to continued self-assessment, learning and growth to increase and broaden culturally competent skillsets that produce effective interactions with people across diverse cultures and backgrounds. This includes the ability to adapt to cultural change.
  • An ability to work both independently and as a member of small teams on multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic and creative environment across time zones and geographies.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with emission inventories.
  • Experience coordinating methane field measurement campaigns.
  • Willingness to travel internationally (<10% of time).
  • Understanding of current methane MRV frameworks
