Analysis reveals true scope of Pennsylvania’s methane emissions, highlights solutions
An updated analysis estimates that Pennsylvania’s oil and gas companies emit at over 1.1 million tons of methane annually. That’s more than 15 times what companies report to the state.

The analysis – based on peer-reviewed research and emissions data collected at Pennsylvania well sites – examines both the total amount of methane and volatile organic compounds emitted from oil and gas sites. These pollutants increase global warming and are threaten public health.
The results are available online, and allows users to:
- Compare EDF estimates with company-reported data
- Get a county-level view of the areas with the worst pollution
- Explore the different tools that could help reduce this pollution by nearly 60%
